An earthman, John Carter, wakes up naked on Mars. He befriends some of the locals but gets involved in many battles and adventures.

Review
This was the first real space adventure, taking us to another world filled with fantastic creatures, great heroes and endless adventure. There had not been anything quite like this before. Earthly adventures which paved the way for this sure, but this was the first on another planet. It was really the perfect way for Burroughs to relate such a fantastic tale. There were no longer any places at all like this on earth and never had earth had such fantastic creatures! Mars was igniting everyone’s imagination and Burroughs used that to let his own run wild. This story paved the way for every science fiction and fantasy adventure written since. Yes it is kind of simple, but the place and culture are different and more simple than earth and the story was pure escapism, so more sophisticated writing would not have captured the feel of the barbaric romanticism Burroughs created here.
