Review

Amazing book! Admittedly I wanted to read this before I see the new movie by Kenneth Brannaugh. But this is whodunnit at its best. Not that the culprit was all that difficult to figure out, but just really enjoyable for the characters and the twists and the ingenious way the murder was done and all of the little detail Christie thought through! This was my third Christie novel and I enjoyed it a lot, but my favorite is still And Then There Were None. Still, I loved the characters. Everyone had issues and everyone had motives, except Linnet of course. Her character was just like a work of art—expensive, beautiful and way above everyone. Unfortunately that made her probably the weakest character, no more interesting than the pearl necklace she wore. But then she was only there to be somebody to kill, so she didn’t need to be more. My favorite character, besides Poirot, who is starting to grow on me, was Jacqueline de Bellefort. She was just really interesting and seemed the Most real of all the characters—not that the others were at all wooden. Christie did an excellent job with all of the characters. My first encounter with Poirot was in Hallowe’en Party last October. I didn’t really warm up to him then, but this time I liked him more. I’m not exactly sure why. Possibly because, Hallowe’en Party being a late sixties novel Christie may not have felt the need to put a lot into him. She had already written a lot of books with him and her readers would have known him well. The story moved along nicely with the writing being easy and a pleasure to read and the action of the story being very captivating. I don’t feel like there was any part of the story that slowed or bogged down. I normally also like some sort of point to be made in a book. I don’t feel this has that but I didn’t miss it. It is only an entertainment but about the best entertainment you can get. Highly recommended! Top Tale!
