“A Martian Ricorso”
1976-02-00
short story
By Greg Bear

Synopsis

An expedition from Earth to Mars finds an interesting Martian society and buildings. They are attacked by an army of the Martians and their ship is damaged.

History

First publication: Analog, February 1976

Review

Bear imagines a very alien sort of society for his Martians, based around an idea of ecological cycles on Mars. None of this holds with what we know of Mars today, but it makes a really fascinating story. Recommended.
