“Manhole 69”
1957-11-00
short story
By J. G. Ballard

Synopsis

Three men elect to undergo an experimental brain surgery that eliminates their need for sleep.

History

First publication: New Worlds #65, November 1957

Review

This seems to have been inspired by Chekov’s “The Bet.” This is about human psychology and how the three minds would be affected when they no longer needed sleep. I’m not sure I buy the idea Ballard has here, but it does make a sort of surreal little story.
