Review

This is a book I both love and hate. A guilty pleasure. There are a lot of inaccuracies to the book, made apparent from the beginning when the Pleiades star cluster is referred to as a double star. There’s a lot of action in this book and some of it gets really hard to believe. So on the surface it seems like it was sloppily written and the author Reilly didn't bother to look up his facts. There is also a fetish for military weapons. I don’t know much about them, so maybe he has all of his facts straight with those, but considering other facts I know are wrong, I wouldn’t bet money on that. But this book still works, it is still a lot of fun. It is over-the-top like an Indiana Jones movie or James Bond. I could see this book being made into a movie with an actor like Bruce Willis. It’s almost a shame it wasn’t filmed. I think it would have been very successful. It’s a long book, but it moves along at a fast easy read pace. You do get engrossed in the action, even though you are laughing at the impossible circumstances. Things like when the main character falls from an airplane—not knowing that he is wearing an experimental jet-pack vest that then saves his life. Righhht. But it’s funny and fun, not stupid. This isn’t high literature and not a top tale. I hate how ridiculous much of it is, but, like a bad movie, I loved it at the same time. Recommended to those who don’t want to take your next book seriously and just want to laugh and thrill and groan and cheer through something that is pure escapism.
