“Instinct vs Reason—A Black Cat”
1840-01-29
short story
By Edgar Allan Poe

Synopsis

A reflection on the antics of a black cat who has learned to open a door latch.

History

First publication: Alexander’s Weekly Message, January 29, 1840

Review

Hardly a story but more of an essay. Poe debates the differences between instinct and reason. The idea that animals like cats only work with instinct defies what you can observe in animals—a real ability to learn and to figure things out.
