“The Great C”
1953-09-00
short story
By Philip K. Dick

Synopsis

A young man goes on a journey to the Great C, a supercomputer which has taken control and had caused an atomic war.

History

First publication: Cosmos, September 1953

Review

More Cold War jitters about growing technology, this time the common idea that computers may gain too much control and take over from us, making us slaves. The development in this story is pretty gruesome, probably paving the way to Ellison’s “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.”
