Review
At this point I have only read from King’s early work. The stories in the first half Night Shift are mostly explorations of various horror tropes from past writers, as if King was exploring his favorites to develop his style. With this story and with Carrie, King hit his stride with a talent for writing horror stories that were centered around characters who had real horror stories in their lives. Carrie and this story draw upon the familiar bullied youth. This story shows how those events can haunt you for the rest of your life. A powerful novelette with memorable characters and a real creepiness that comes from being partially our real life experience and partially supernatural. In this way King brings the horror close to our own lives and fears.
