Review

Verne’s first story, a short one. Nothing fantastic or science fictional here, which is true of a lot of Verne’s fiction. Being a reader of the english language, I am confined to translations of Verne’s work. This one I couldn’t find except as a free text online. I think the translation was not that good. A lot of times with online texts and ebooks you even get extremely abridged texts, so it becomes hard to judge these works. Even so, the story is here and I feel it is weak. Verne was very much a writer who wanted to explore the world in his stories. This was a succesful strategy for him in his day. So it’s interesting to see him doing this even in his very first story. But it is only of historical and bibliographic interest.
