Homer

Homer is the presumed author of The Iliad and The Odyssey. He is presumed because there is no real evidence that he lived, other than the two epic poems. The storytelling tradition in the Mediterranean during the time he is supposed to have lived was primarily a vocal tradition, with wandering bards telling stories, often retelling stories from other bards. If he lived, it would have been sometime in the late eigth to early seventh century B.C. The general tradition claims that he was blind and was born in Chios.
