Review

This is my first work by Koontz and I loved it. It isn’t a perfect book. There are some parts that I just couldn’t buy. Mainly the whole idea that after being witness to a serial killer slaughtering a family, the protagonist, Chyna, would go after him by herself. But if she hadn’t then there wouldn’t have been a story here. So I overlook that. Koontz writes in a style that is incredibly detailed, describing things more thoroughly than necessary, yet it didn’t bog the book down. I found myself continually turning pages. That’s one thing I have to point out. He purposely ends chapters in a way that leaves you wanting more, so you feel compelled to keep reading. Chyna is a great protagonist and Vess is a great monster. He’s not a monster in the traditional sense–no ugly Phantom. He’s a likable guy to the world around him, but has absolutely no empathy or remorse and a love of pushing situations to an extreme. Highly recommended.
